EU: Court of Justice hears cases challenging biomass in taxonomy

The Court of Justice is hearing challenges to the European Commission's inclusion of biomass in its taxonomy rules, which classify certain activities as ‘sustainable’ investments.

A coalition of NGOs under the banner of the Forest Litigation Collaborative say the rules would only encourage projects that contribute to climate change.

And tomorrow, the court will hear a case brought by ClientEarth, challenging the commission's decision to label bioplastics and the use of forest biomass for bio-energy as ‘green investments’ in the EU taxonomy.

They are just two of many challenges to the EU's taxonomy. One brought by ClientEarth about gas has been stayed until another brought by Austria on gas and nuclear has been resolved (that one was heard in October).
